Andy Serkis stars as Gollum in The Hobbit.
Despite lukewarm reviews, the first instalment in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, grossed $3-million at its midnight screenings across the U.S. on Friday, setting a December record.
The film, shot in 3D, opened at 3,100 theatres in the wee hours of Dec, 14, according to the The Hollywood Reporter, and its midnight tallies have set a one-night record for a film opening in December. The film is expected to pull $75-$90 million in box office sales over the weekend — a far reach from this year’s top-earning films, which were The Avengers ($206 million in its opening weekend) and The Dark Knight Rises ($160million).
